From Taxpayer.com:
TO THE LEGISLATURE:
As taxpayers in British Columbia, we already insure our homes, our property, and our lives from a choice of various insurance providers.
ICBC's monopoly robs consumers of open competition and choice.
86% of Canadian Taxpayers Federation supporters want ICBC to face competition--they want the choice of who will insure their automobile.
We the undersigned also want the freedom of choice on auto insurance.
We the undersigned petition the Legislature to provide for free and open competition in auto insurance - and an end to the ICBC monopoly we want a choice!

I disagree many things with the editors on the taxpayer.com. But car insurance do need competition to drive the fee down!
I totally agree. The URL has been sent to
http://www.icbcsucks.com
I think part of the problem is that ICBC is too interested in paying for injury instead of paying to help curtail the injury from occuring in the first place! I suggest ICBC help buy snow plows to cut down on the cost of doctors, hospitals, ambulance, fire rescue, damages, injuries, and helicopters because the ambulance was stuck in the snow as what happened in my subdivison this year. I think we just need to refine ICBC, and a little competition doesn't hurt either!
Sorry folks but your notions about Government Insurance and your pathetic whinning about ICBC won't get any sympathy from me. Most if not the majority of you folks have never lived in the wild and wholly world of Private Insurance and that's why you sound so, how can I phrase this and not appear to be over reacting, freaking rediculaous!
LA - 1970 - class 1 Chauffer's Lic. 100% non accident record previous 10 years - Caddy sedan - 40 years old, Non business coverage, get the picture now check out the cost: $300,000 liability coverage $2,600.00 US!
Is that what you want? Really? This year 2008 I get full business coverage, 2,000,000 liability etc. for $1,600.00. What the hell are you complaining about?
You let those private insurers in and you can kiss your ass goodbye sports fans. You think your having it rough now . . . just wait. Wait until your first accident when the first thing that happens is that you get cancelled. That's right cancelled. It doesn't matter if you're in the right . . . you get cancelled anyway and now you have the fun of joining the ranks of "high risk club". Sure they will defend you for the accident you had but that's where it all ends. Now the fun really begins.
Sorry . . . get educated on this before you slobber all over yourselves with self pity. You've got it good but I have all the confidence in the world that like most Canadian whinners you'll find a way to blow it up because you think the grass really is . . . greener on the other side of the fence.
Boo Hoo
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a competitive auto insurance industry. I'm originally from NY and thanks to their competitive industry I lowered my insurance from $1200 a year to just under $800 per year without having to change providers. A provider gave me a quote, which I tool back to my long-time provider and said what can you do for me. After a conversation about my driving habits - usage, avg. monthly mileage etc. - they came back with the lower quote. My coverage was not changed in any way other than to reflect the reality of my driving habits of the time. I'm getting screwed by ICBC right now because they want to pay back fees because THEY screwed up in the determination of my discount (not my agent, ICBC screwed up) and now they want me to pay for their screw-up. In a competitive industry I'd tell them to go screw themselves and get a policy with another provider. Instead I have to battle with the "Fair Practices" division of ICBC who has absolutely no interest in fairness.
And don't let the guy from LA - he's quoting an insurance from 1970; over 30 years ago!
ICBC can stay but we must be free to have a choice.
PLAIN & SIMPLE
ICBC can stay BUT We Got to have a choice.
"PLAIN & SIMPLE"
Originally from California, it just doesn't make sense to me why people in BC have to pay up to four times as must for thier auto insurances. I just can't beleive how much more expensive isurance is here. I moved to BC from California last yeat. I brought with me same car from California that I used to pay $52 a month for insurance. Same coverage for same car with ICBC was $139 monthly. I am paying almost 3 times as much. It makes me sick why people are being ripped off by ICBC this way. I just can't beleive that a great country like Canada will still let monoploy abuse its citizens in this modern day and ara.
I strongly beleive that more insurance competitions will save BC residents tons of money that currently ICBC is stealing from them.
Please do not beleive in some comments on site stating private companies will drop you after your first accident. I dorve for 18 years in California and was never dropped by any insurance company. However, I have to admit that you can be dropped after "multiple" accidents and reckeless driving. But there is always another insurance company that will cover you for higher premium, which is still less than lowest price paid for excellent driveres covered by ICBC.
Trust me people in BC are at huge disadvantage and are paying crazy high prices for auto insurance here.
BC residents should have choice and should raise up thier voices about privatization of auto insurance company. Imagine saving upto 70% or higher on your auto insurance!!!!!!
